People Analytics and the Lean Organisation: A Synergy That Works
Henry Ford recognised that operational measures on assembly lines would allow him to predict throughput which would yield expected revenues and hence predict returns. Nonetheless, measurement has not always been operational in focus. Elton Mayo’s experiments in the Western Electric Hawthorne Plant in 1945, enabled him to predict that employee’s productivity could be altered by changes to break times, temperature and indeed, could be enhanced by altering the factory lighting. More than seventy years later we are still grappling with the concept of people measurement. People Analytics (PA) promises to replace intuition with data-based decision making and evidence based strategies in Human Resource (HR) settings. However, doubt exists as to whether HR professionals are really embracing and utilising PA (Jones, 2014). The value of PA is significant, and many organisations are harnessing this power to achieve advantage. Understanding how an organisations workforce is generating value is the true measure of PA (CIPD, 2018).

In this presentation, Triona will explore evidence from Irish firms that have adopted PA, thereby revealing synergies between PA and Lean organisations. Undoubtedly an overriding perspective is that PA improves business performance.
